4. Body area network for wireless patient monitoring (communications IET)
Year Of Publishing : 2008

(EXERCISE) Patient data monitoring is a key issue for health and disease management. The use of wireless sensors within a body area network (BAN) makes this task seamless and easy. A BAN system is presented, which allows the connectivity of a wide range of heterogeneous body sensors to a portable hub device that is connectable to external networks (IEEE 802.11, GPRS). This BAN is based on the use of Zigbee/IEEE 802.15.4 standard technology and off-the-shelf modules. It is currently being used at the European level for the detection and the prediction of the human physiological state in relation to wakefulness, fatigue, and stress applications in which users carrying out daily activities are monitored in an unobtrusive and comfortable way. Characterised by its low power consumption, low cost, and ability to connect a wide range of heterogeneous sensors, this system can substantially improve the performance of different services, especially those that are health related. 2008

5. An Integrated Architecture for Demand Response Communications and Control
Year Of Publishing : 2008

In the competitive electricity structure, demand response programs enable customers to react dynamically to changes in electricity prices. The implementation of such programs may reduce energy costs and increase reliability. To fully harness such benefits, existing load controllers and appliances need around-theclock price information. Advances in the development and deployment of Advanced Meter Infrastructures (AMIs), Building Automation Systems (BASs), and various dedicated embedded control systems provide the capability to effectively address this requirement. In this paper we introduce a Meter Gateway Architecture (MGA) to serve as a foundation for integrated control of loads by energy aggregators, facility hubs, and intelligent appliances. We discuss the requirements that motivate the architecture, describe its design, and illustrate its application to a small system with an intelligent appliance and a legacy appliance using a prototype implementation of an intelligent hub for the MGA and ZigBee wireless communications. 2008

7. ZigBee-based alarm system for pervasive healthcare in rural areas
Year Of Publishing : 2008

An alarm system suitable for pervasive healthcare in rural areas is presented. Taking advantage of ZigBee features, users can move freely around their habitual environment while enjoying constant protection. The resulting system is cost-effective, easily deployed (no wiring is needed) and the mobile device's batteries last for months. The user interface is a key issue when working with the elderly and those with disabilities. To ensure proper usability and avoid abandoning of the device, an alarm-detection procedure has been developed and contrasted with end-users. The application scenario is the isolated village of Fortanete, Spain, where the self- sustainability of the system is essential. In this environment, management of the alarm relies upon the user's relatives and neighbours to solve any problems that arise. Privacy and ethical considerations have also been addressed, as this kind of system can potentially invade the users' privacy; cognitive disabilities of the users also make it mandatory. 2008

8. Remote Power ON/OFF control & current measurement for Home Electric Outlets based on a Low Power Embedded Board & Zigbee communication
Year Of Publishing : 2008

In this paper we have designed a remote power on/off control and a current measurement for electric outlets, based on both an embedded board and on ZigBee communication. This design consists of two parts: the ZigBee control module and the server module. The ZigBee control module contains several controllable outlets, a current measurement circuit, the ZigBee receiving and transmission circuit and a micro control unit. The measurement circuit senses the current and sends back a signal to the server module through the ZigBee. The measurement data of the current and voltage detection can be stored in the embedded board, and they can be designed to become aware of any overload and to send out a message to the circuit breaker for safety. We use Visual Basic as the interface software for the design of the graphic user interface to provide a user-friendly operation of a typical homepsilas electric outlets. 2008

9. ZigBee Device Access Control & Reliable Data Transmission in ZigBee Based Health Monitoring System
Year Of Publishing : 2008

One user's health monitoring system has a few ZigBee devices to measure one user's physiological data. Even if there are a lot of ZigBee devices nearby, the communication should be accepted between only one user's ZigBee devices. So, the access control should be implemented because there can be a lot of ZigBee devices nearby. There is an access control in MAC layer but we design and implement it in application layer to handle conveniently. The physiological data must not be lost but a wireless communication such as ZigBee can lose a data. So, this paper proposes the reliable data transmission not to lose a physiological data in ZigBee based health monitoring system. 2008

10. Wireless Access Monitoring and Control System based on Digital Door Lock
Year Of Publishing : 2007

(DONE) In this study, we propose a novel wireless access monitoring and control system based on the digital door lock, which is explosively used as a digital consumer device. Digital door lock is an electronic locking system operated by the combination of digital key, security password or number codes. This paper presents a prototype of the proposed system and shows a scheme for the implementation. To implement the system with ZigBee network protocol, four types of modules are developed, ZigBee module, digital door lock module, human detection module, and ZigBee relay module. ZigBee module is designed to support wireless sensor network and also used for the ZigBee tag to identify the access objects. Digital door lock module is implemented as a digital consumer device to control the access system as well as locking system. It is very convenient system for the consumers and has extensible and flexible characteristics. That is, it can be used as a home security system by the ZigBee network with additional sensor devices. Therefore, it can be a good practical product for the realization of an access monitoring and control system. It also can be applied to the real market for home networking system. Furthermore, the system can be extended to another service such as a connection between mobile phone and home networking system. 2007

11. Wireless Microclimate Sensor
Year Of Publishing : 2007

The paper discusses the development of wireless microclimate sensor. The sensor forms the generic component of a microclimate wireless sensor network (WSN). The network is based on IEEE 802.15.4 low power wireless protocol supported by ZigBee stack. The key objective of the network is to support remote monitoring and management of large orchards. The designed sensor together with a locally developed cell modem facilitate the main components for defining a microclimate wireless sensor network that could be accessed remotely. The developed sensor takes care of the critical environmental sensing for the horticultural application needs. It also takes care of energy management and self- replenishment. Preliminary results of the design sensor reflect good performance in coverage of large horticultural fields at a reasonably low cost. Five Sunlight hours a day would keep the sensor functional through its storage mechanism. The architecture allows for both power and location awareness. Identification of the field areas that require attention could be made through either light emission or embedded location awareness algorithm. Range of view for the frost alarm system would be in the region of 500 meters. Initial testing reflects promising results.

12. A ZigBee-Based Power Monitoring System with Direct Load Control Capabilities
Year Of Publishing : 2007

ZigBee is a wireless networking standard that has characteristics of low power consumption, having up to 65535 device nodes, and low data rates. It is suitable to be applied in many home and industrial applications that could operate in harsh radio environments and in isolated locations. In this paper, a novel ZigBee-based powering monitoring system (PMS) is proposed. In particular, the proposed PMS utilizes ZigBee for wireless communication, DSP (Digital Signal Processing) for realtime power parameters computation, and Web Services for constructing the communication infrastructure among distributed systems across networks. A paradigm system for monitoring campus power consumptions is constructed and experimented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed PMS. The testing results show that the functions of the proposed PMS comply with the designed objectives. The paradigm PMS also demonstrates good performances in direct load control and warning message transmission. This work possesses novelty for first time integrating ZigBee, DSP, and Web Services technologies to develop PMS, and can be a useful reference for future developments of PMS. 2007

14. ZigBee and The UPnP Expansion for Home Network Electrical Appliance Control on the Internet

Year Of Publishing : 2007

Electrical appliances of the home network via the Internet can be controlled using the ZigBee system and the UPnP expansion like the ones in the same home network without the modification of the existing UPnP. In this paper, we propose an Internet gateway that consists of ZigBee and the UPnP IGD (Internet gateway device) DCP(device control protocol) and the UPnP bridge for the control of electrical appliances of the Internet home network with a low data rate and low power consumption. ZigBee technology is a low data rate, low power consumption, low cost, wireless networking protocol targeted towards automation and remote control applications. The UPnP IGD DCP is the configurable initiation and sharing of Internet connections, advanced connection-management, management of host configuration, and supports transparent Internet access by non-UPnP-certified devices. The UPnP bridge searches for local home network devices by sending control messages. Control points of the UPnP bridge searches for devices of interest on the Internet and can deliver the control devices on other home networks to devices within its home network. With our approach, devices can control home electrical appliances and ZigBee System via Internet through IGD DCP on other home network with control commands of the UPnP. 2007

15. ZigBee based Dynamic Control Scheme for Multiple Legacy IR Controllable

Year Of Publishing : 2007

A URC (universal remote control) unit is a device for controlling many different CE (consumer electronics) devices with a single one. To control the various CE devices based on IR (infrared) control signal, the URC unit has to have many preprogrammed control codes for controlling them because they are controlled with many different types of IR profile stated with lead code, carrier frequency, duty cycle, duration and so forth. In this paper, we propose a dynamic control scheme for multiple legacy IR controllable digital CE devices based on IEEE802.15.4, especially ZigBee protocol. The proposed scheme uses a URC unit using ZigBee based wireless network technique, WPAN (wireless personal area network), and a `Z2IR (ZigBee to IR)' conversion module, converted a control message transferred through ZigBee network into IR typed control signal. In this scheme, we can configure controllable CE devices based on user's mobility and minimize power consumption based on ZigBee ON/OFF control technique using multiple level timers. 2007

Year Of Publishing : 2007

Measuring current is fundamental to electrical engineering. Wireless current sensing systems, which do not involve the insertion of a sensor into a circuit, are attractive. This paper describes the implementation and performance of such a system using the recently introduced ZigBee wireless protocol. The system uses a Rogowski coil as the sensor, and a transmitter unit incorporating an integrator, microcontroller and ZigBee transmitter module. The receiver has a further ZigBee module, and a further microcontroller driving a liquid crystal display giving a current readout. Testing shows that the system works, with a linearity error of less than 0.04 A and a potential battery lifetime of eight months 2006
